Statement: Hospice sectors in UK facing financial crisis

Willowbrook Hospice was saddened to see the BBC news over the weekend, reporting that five hospices across the UK have announced job redundancies and are making some very difficult decisions regarding reducing their end-of-life care services.

According to Hospice UK – the national charity that fights for hospice care across the UK for all who need it – the whole Hospice sector in the UK is facing the worst financial crisis it has seen to date. Therefore Hospice UK are lobbying the Government to help improve the current funding for all hospices across the UK.

We want to provide some reassurance about your local hospice.

?Willowbrook is an independent local charity, and although we receive a grant from the government via the NHS, this only represents 29% of the money needed to provide all our services for the people of St Helens and Knowsley.

?We therefore rely heavily on donations, customers for our shops and our many extremely generous supporters. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to meet the £10,000 per day that it costs to run the hospice. As a community, you contribute over £3.5m to Willowbrook each year to enable this to happen.

?Everyone at Willowbrook is extremely grateful that we have not yet reached the point that these five hospices find themselves in.

?However, with the ever-increasing costs of running our end-of-life care services, we are working hard to make sure we remain in a good financial position. This of course, puts even more pressure on you – our supporters – who contribute so generously to our fundraising and retail income.

?On behalf of the Executive Leadership Team at Willowbrook Hospice, thank you to all of our supporters, for your ongoing commitment to keeping Willowbrook sustainable and thus able to provide its crucial end of life services.

?Without you as our friends and donors, and your unwavering generosity, we wouldn’t have been able to run our specialist end-of-life care services for the last 27 years. In three years, we reach our 30th Anniversary and with your support, we look forward to celebrating this anniversary with you.

Due to the current situation with Coronavirus and for the wellbeing of our patients, we kindly ask that all monetary donations are paid direct to our bank account, via online access to Nat West Bank:
